Amarachi-Dance
‘Amarachi Dance’ is the debut video of Amarachi Uyanne, winner of Nigeria’s Got Talent season 1. The Nigeria’s Got Talent is a reality talent show, the Nigerian version of the Got Talent series . The show is aimed at exposing the talents of singers, dancers, comedians, magicians among the very diverse talents to be found in Nigeria, all contesting to win the advertised Ten million naira prize money. When Amarachi Uyanne won, I bet a lot of people may have automatically placed her in the category of winners who disappear from the limelight after bagging the prize money. Her age easily lends substance to such thought, I mean, she was just 8 when she won, what could she possibly do? Well, she’s back on the scene with a video that has got her name on everyone’s lips.
The video begins with a school room scene, the opening strings keeping you interested to see where the story leads. It then glides into the hip-hop inspired scene, that signals the show is about to begin. Though beautifully done, there was no connection between the classroom scene and the dance floor, the actual theme of the video. It leaves you wondering what the story was to be at that point. It was also a bit of a cliche that she was in the same classroom as older ladies, typical of what we see in Nollywood movies. It makes you wonder where the dancers of Amarachi’s age group appeared from when the video began in earnest.
It was easy to get past that by the time the video was in full swing, as her character and swag was enrapturing. At the point where her actual introductions begin, you would be reminded of the child star Willow Smith in Amarachi’s charisma, the frames and costume-particularly the hair and lips. The brazen attitude, the originality and the flair to dance, were more inborn than scripted as she couldn’t stop dancing, her talent coming to the surface move after move. The transition between scenes were artfully executed, the pictures clear and the dark hues at some points in the video emphasizing her moves – the scenes with the ballet and Indian dances were really cool. The entire video was an affirmation to the skillful ability of the director, Clarence Peters. Great direction or not, it was obvious Amarachi is quite able to brand herself, soon to join the queue of artistes who infuse the igbo language into their lyrics.
However, it was a bit confusing trying to figure out the actual dance steps that qualify the ‘Amarachi dance’ , as there was quite a mix of dance moves, ranging from etighi, to azonto, a bit of alingo and others I could”nt possibly name. Watching carefully, one would notice a move where she went from side to side, lifting her legs at an angle as she went. Although this could be the dance style we all were anticipating, it wasn’t demonstrated repeatedly, enough times to establish it as the Amarachi dance. Despite this, the song and video sure can get your body moving, embedding itself in your subconscious.
We do not know how far she would have to go to become a bankable artiste in the music industry, but this one video is a clear indication she means business. Capital Hill Records executive IllBliss has hinted a possibility of signing up the amazingly talented young artiste, so with guided direction, she is sure to go far.
