Friday, the 13th will go down in history as the day fairy godmother of pop music and Queen, Beyoncé, shocked the world in a most unusual way and with a most unusual act.
If you do not know this by now, then you must be hungry to sit down and be dulling (in the words of Omawumi).
Beyoncé went on to releasing her 5th self-titled studio album very early in the wee hours of Friday morning on iTunes. Her one of a kind, first of its kind “Visual Album” comprised 14 oven fresh, hot tracks and 17 spanking new videos. Each track got an official video and she threw in extras because she’s Beyoncé and we just can’t get enough of her awesomeness.
Beyoncé has proven that she is all the PR she needs; no specially concerted promotional campaign, marketing or press of any kind, relating to the eventual release of her self-titled album. You might call that pride but believe me, it’s actually self worth. I’m sure she’d be thrilled to later hear about how many scampered around just to be first reporter(s) of this sizzling info (after, it’s release of course).
Her album includes songs with features from husband and daughter, Jay Z and Blue Ivy, Frank Ocean, Drake and Nigeria’s very own writer and anticipated Nobel laureate winner – Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
It’s quite interesting to think that Beyoncé succeeded in keeping all of this under strict wraps and without any word coming to light, not even with the anticipated leaks before its official release. Believe me, that’s management at its best and Bey sits atop, in total charge. Yes, we knew Queen Bey’s got something cooking for us, but never would we have believed even if we dreamed that it would be today.
The diva has a thing for shutting things down. Even the iTunes site crashed temporarily as they couldn’t (or perhaps, weren’t well prepared) to handle the influx of traffic on the Beyoncé demand. This is even reminiscent of the lights out drama at the Super Bowl after her half time performance.
Twitter went agog and in minutes the singer’s name was already trending in the UK. Younger sister, Solange led the opening tweet to herald Bey’s finished work followed by a legion of fans including celebrated pop acts baring their support.
I quote my bosom friend in saying…”ok so there is Earth, Air, Water and Fire…and then there’s Beyoncé”. #EOD!
