American hip pop singer, Rihanna, is to be honoured with the Icon Award at the 2013 American Music Awards on November 24.
The 25-year-old singer is the first artist to receive the special merit award.
AMA producer Larry Klein said: “The first-ever Icon Award was created to honour an artist whose body of work has made a profound influence over pop music on a global level.
“Rihanna’s iconic and innovative sound has enabled her to become one of the most influential and bestselling artists of all time.”
The ‘Love the Way You Lie’ singer has sold 50 million albums and 180 million singles worldwide throughout the course of her eight-year career.
Earlier this month, she made history by becoming one of just three acts to top the UK singles chart seven times over seven years – a feat only previously achieved by The Beatles and Elvis Presley.
Rihanna is scheduled to perform at the event and has been nominated in four categories including Artist of the Year, Favourite Pop/Rock Female Artist, Favourite Soul/R&B Female Artist, and Favourite Soul/R&B Album for ‘Unapologetic’.
Earlier in the week, the singer released her new music video for ‘What Now’ the sixth single from the same album.
