Factional chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Abubakar Kawu Baraje, has resigned his position as chairman of the governing board of Nigeria Railway Corporation, NRC.
This is even as some members of the board had earlier passed a vote of no-confidence in Baraje, who they accused of dereliction of responsibilities and failure to promptly convene board meetings as stipulated by the NRC Act.
But Baraje hinged his resignation on the need to have more time and room to manage his faction of the PDP as well as avoid any insinuation or plot to use his position as NRC chairman to blackmail or embarrass him in future.
In his resignation letter addressed to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, Baraje thanked President Goodluck Jonathan for appointing him to the position but said he cannot continue due to the ongoing crisis in the ruling party.
“Realizing that the position of the Nigeria Railway Corporation Chairmanship was allocated to the party and of which I am supposed to symbolize, I would appreciate if your good office could please convey to His Excellency, Mr. President, of my intention to relinquish this position with immediate effect because I can no longer represent the interest of the party whose leadership I no longer believe in,” he had written.
