Angelina Jolie has received the honourary Oscars at a private ceremony at the Hollywood and Highland Centre for her humanitarian achievements.
The Governors Awards “honour extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences, or for outstanding service to the Academy”.
Jolie received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award and became tearful as she thanked her late mother, whom she said inspired her to think of others and give back.
The actress has been an “impassioned advocate for humanitarian causes, travelling widely to promote organisations and social justice efforts”, the Academy said.
Jolie, who announced in May that she had undergone a double mastectomy to reduce her high risk of breast cancer, has staked out a career “at the nexus of entertainment and philanthropy”, it said.
“Receiving the Hersholt Award makes me feel like I am on the right path but also reminds me I have more to do,” said the actress.
She previously won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 2000 for her role in Girl, Interrupted.
The ceremony is not televised to preserve a sense of intimacy and allow for lengthy tributes to each winner, but clips from the event may be included in the Oscars broadcast on March 2.
It is the fifth year the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has presented its honourary awards at a separate ceremony.
